Bullfinches are wonderfully vibrant winter birds in the UK, with the male birds showing off a bright pinky-orange breast and cheeks and the females a slightly subtler shade. Slightly larger than a robin, these beautiful birds are very shy despite their bold plumage and has a quiet, whistling ‘peu’ call.
Bullfinches were once considered pests for eating young buds in fruit orchards, and used to be severely culled each year as a result. They were popular as caged birds in Victorian times due to their striking colours and soft, musical song – and were also supposedly able to be trained to mimic music.
The UK population of bullfinches has declined 36% since 1967, with loss and damage of woodland, orchards and hedgerows being leading factors in fewer bullfinches successfully breeding in the UK. The bullfinch is on the Amber List of conservation concern.
